Greetings Visitors!
Welcome to my Kindergarten classroom web page! I’m Mrs. Amy Monteiro. The 2011-2012 school year is my 18th year working in early childhood education and 12th year teaching Kindergarten (11th in Westwood). I created this page to quickly and easily communicate back-and-forth with the families of the children in my class and I welcome anyone to post comments and questions to me (or to the other families) through this site. Please check back often to stay up to date with what’s going on in our classroom. You can subscribe through an rss feed reader (feed button is at the bottom left hand corner of this page) or below to receive posts via email. I’m looking forward to another fun year in KM!

Nice to be recognized…
...although it was only by some silly teacher website with no real credence. Now if it was awarded by the MTA or NEA, this button would appear right at the top of the page!

I missed a day of posting. I feel like I’m slacking already! I guess the long days of screening have left me with a bit less time.

It was nice to see so many of you at the picnic tonight. Don’t forget picture day is tomorrow. We have PE first thing in the morning so if you want to send your child in sneakers but would like them to wear other shoes for the picture, please send them in their backpack and let them know that you want them to change them. Also, if you want me to brush or comb their hair, feel free to send a brush or comb as well. I’m not very good at fancy hairdos but I can try to tidy up what you do before school if it gets messy in PE.

Today the kids were able to meet Miss Thurston in the Library. They were also allowed to borrow a book from the library that they should be bringing home in their backpack. Please be sure that the library book comes back to school next TUESDAY so it can be returned and another book (or books) can be borrowed.

We added the attendance stick to our morning jobs. As the kids how we count how many children we have in class each day. We also learned about the Playdough center!

We had a fire drill this morning. It went really, really well. There were a few children that were nervous when we talked about it before it happened but even they agreed afterwards that it was no big deal. Ask your child how we behave and where we go during fire drills.

We also went up to the Art room to meet Mr. Hagel for our first art class. Ask your child what they worked on in Art.

Today was a very busy day. The kids in KM got to go to the gym early this morning for their first PE class with Miss Cook. Ask them what game they played with her and if they remember what color group they are in in PE. After a quick Morning Meeting, story, and snack, we finally got to go outside for recess and play on the equipment! We were all so grateful for a little sunshine. Ask them to tell you what they played on and who they played with.

We didn’t get a chance to discuss the fire drill today so I will be sure to discuss it with them first thing Monday so they will be ready for it before it occurs. I’ll let you know on Monday afternoon how it went. Have a nice weekend!

Despite the rain (and the resulting extra wiggly bodies) we had another great day in KM! The kids are beginning to remember that they need to bring their VIP’s everyday, where to put it when they arrive, how to hang up their belongings themselves, and where to “sign in”. We completed a scavenger hunt in the classroom this morning. Ask your child to recall something we hunted for. They heard all about my Kindergarten memories and even saw a picture of me when I was in Kindergarten! Because we couldn’t go out for recess, we introduced 2 new centers today instead of 1, the reading rug and the math center. Ask your child what manipulative they choose at the math center and how they can tell which shelf each book belongs on in our classroom library.

Tomorrow morning we will be going to the gym to meet Miss Cook, the PE teacher, for our first PE class. Please remember that the children need to wear sneakers every Friday (and try to stay away from dresses and skirts for the girls, if possible). Have a great evening!
