Greetings Visitors!
Welcome to my Kindergarten classroom web page! I’m Mrs. Amy Monteiro. The 2011-2012 school year is my 18th year working in early childhood education and 12th year teaching Kindergarten (11th in Westwood). I created this page to quickly and easily communicate back-and-forth with the families of the children in my class and I welcome anyone to post comments and questions to me (or to the other families) through this site. Please check back often to stay up to date with what’s going on in our classroom. You can subscribe through an rss feed reader (feed button is at the bottom left hand corner of this page) or below to receive posts via email. I’m looking forward to another fun year in KM!

Nice to be recognized…
...although it was only by some silly teacher website with no real credence. Now if it was awarded by the MTA or NEA, this button would appear right at the top of the page!

Archive for September, 2010

Today we illustrated the September poem. We also drew self portraits for our parents. We explored counting bears, buttons, color tiles, and attribute blocks during Math. Miss Thurston practiced ABC’s in the Library. We finished the day with Choice Time.

Hope to see all of you tonight for Curriculum Night!

Today the kids are going to help me with my post. Here goes:

We had Choice Time. You can build with blocks. We played with Playdough.

We read Alphie’s ABC’s and Nice Try, Toothfairy. We learned that good readers take care of books. One friend lost her first tooth.

Well the first 2 long days have gone off without a hitch. Lunch was exciting. The first day was a learning process but by day 2, everyone got through the lunch line rather quickly. This morning Mrs. Brown, the school nurse, tested every one’s vision and hearing. We also got to go up to Mrs. Guadagno’s forth grade class to meet Officer Pindel and to learn about school bus safety. Then we all got to practice a school bus evacuation. The kids met Mrs. Cote, our technology teacher and Mr. Hagelour Art teacher. Ask your child about our new Choice Board. They should be able to tell you how they know if there is space available at a center they want to go to. All in all a very busy few days.

Today is the first full day of Kindergarten!

Please remember to have a discussion with your child about lunch, meaning let them know if you are expecting them to eat a lunch that you packed,  if you are expecting them to buy milk at school, or if you are expecting them to buy their lunch at school.

Also, if you are going to be sending lunch, today or any day, please be sure you pack their morning snack SEPERATE from lunch (lunch in a lunchbox, snack in the small front pocket of their backpack for example) and TELL THEMwhere each is (seems like a small detail but a very important one)! This will avoid any confusion and prevent them from eating their lunch at 10AM any being hungry later OR, even better, eating their lunch at 10AM and using their lunch card to charge a lunch at 12:30 and you end up with a surprise bill next month!

We will be having a dry run of lunch procedures this morning so that they will understand where to go, how to buy milk, how to buy their lunch, and where they will sit before the big event. Snack is typically at 10AM, lunch is at 12:30. We will be having Choice Time in the afternoon. One choice in the afternoon is snack. Typically most children do not choose snack as they would rather play but we do offer the option so if your child is a grazer and might be hungry again around 2:30, you might want to send an afternoon snack. Please be sure snacks are healthy.

The kids are typically extra tired and crabby in the evenings during the first few weeks of long days. This will usually improve with time and is certainly not a sign that anything is wrong. You might want to try to get them in bed a little early, both for their health and your sanity! ;)

Today we had a long  discussion about the Sheehan Core Four, our core values. You all received a copy of them that you signed last week. Children throughout the school can earn core four tickets for exhibiting positive behaviors. The entire student body is working together to earn enough tickets for a schoolwide reward. Ask your child what they are working toward.

Don’t forget to wear sneakers and return library books tomorrow!
