The Countdown Is On!
Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers
Greetings Visitors!
Welcome to my Kindergarten classroom web page! I’m Mrs. Amy Monteiro. The 2010-2011 school year is my 17th year working in early childhood education and 11th year teaching Kindergarten (10th in Westwood). I created this page to quickly and easily communicate back-and-forth with the families of the children in my class and I welcome anyone to post comments and questions to me (or to the other families) through this site. Please check back often to stay up to date with what’s going on in our classroom. You can subscribe through an rss feed reader (feed button is at the bottom left hand corner of this page) or below to receive posts via email. I’m looking forward to another fun year in KM!

Hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween. Please remember that both our morning and optional afternoon snacks at school should be healthy items. As tempting as it may be to send in Halloween candy next week (if for no other reason than to get it out of your house!) please do not send it in to school for snack. The resulting sugar rush does not do well for staying on task and it isn’t in keeping with our wellness policy. Thanks!

This month’s Book Club is filled with great books and software that would make great birthday and holiday gifts for the kids in your life.

Order using the monthly flyer…or order online! Our class earns a FREE book for our classroom library every time a parent orders online!

To order online, go to the Web address below and enter our class’s personalized user name and password in the sign-in fields on the right side of the page. Note: You do not need to create your own user name and password

Don’t forget our Fox Hill field trip is tomorrow. Kids will need to BRING their costumes to school.

Also, I have some cute pictures from PJ day and I’m sure we will have some cute ones from tomorrow as well. I’d like to put some of them in the photo gallery on our web site but since that particular section of our website is password protected I need to send the password to you. There will be a small strip of paper in each child’s VIP today with the password on it. Once you enter the password, if you have cookies turned on, you shouldn’t need to enter it every time you visit from that computer. I’ll put the pictures up tonight or tomorrow. If you have trouble viewing them, please let me know.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has a really cool website with math games that are fun and educational and are awesome practice for our class. I’ll probably introduce the kids to these games in class sometime soon but you might want to play them at home as well. I especially like Concentration, Five Frame, How Many Under the Shell, and Ten Frame. Some games are geared towards a wider variety of kids but these are great for building number sense for Kindergartners. You can find these games here: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activities.aspx?grade=1 Enjoy!

Oh, I’ll put a link to it in the Useful Links box on the right.

Thanks to an “on top of things” mom, I was reminded that I wanted to remind all of you that tomorrow is Pajama Day at the Sheehan! I LOVE pajama day and so do the kids. Leave the slippers at home though, they are not allowed!

Also, Kindergarten kids sometimes have a hard time staying on task especially now that we are beginning to do more academic work at tables throughout our day. As a way of motivating them to stay on task, both during workshop times and during transitions, we have started a Gold Stars Chart. Throughout the day, I place gold stars on a chart in our classroom when I notice children are on task, for example, they are talking to their partner about the books they are reading during Readers’ Workshop rather than talking about the soccer game on Saturday. If a child earns 10 gold stars throughout the week, they will earn a reward. Gold Star Rewards will be determined soon but may include eating lunch with me in the classroom, a special note home recognizing their accomplishment, or a prize from a prize box (a box of pencils, erasers, silly putty, hopping frogs, etc….a sneaky way of getting them to build those fine motor skills!). Ask your child if they got any Gold Stars today.
